Ignition Repair & Replacement
What to expect
The ignition cylinder takes a beating. Every start, every heavy key ring swinging from it, and every year of West Texas dust wears its pins and springs a little more. Eventually the key gets hard to turn, sticks in place, or won't go in at all.
We repair and replace ignition cylinders for many cars, pickups, and SUVs, and match the new cylinder to your existing keys whenever possible, so you don't have to carry two.
Signs of an ignition problem
- The key won't turn, or only turns after jiggling
- The key won't go in, or gets stuck and won't come out
- The ignition feels loose or turns without resistance
- A key broke off inside the ignition
- The ignition was damaged in a theft attempt
How we handle ignition repairs
First, a quick check: if the steering wheel is locked, turn it gently left and right while turning the key. That releases the steering lock and solves many "stuck ignition" calls on the spot.
If that doesn't do it, we check whether the problem is the key or the cylinder. A badly worn key can feel just like a failing ignition, and cutting a fresh key may be all it takes. When the cylinder itself is worn or damaged, we repair it where possible or replace it with a new cylinder keyed to your existing key.
Many vehicles have a transponder system tied to the key, so we make sure your keys still start the engine after any ignition work. And if the real problem turns out to be electrical, like a starter or battery, we'll tell you so you can take it to the right place. We repair ignitions in Midland, Odessa, Lubbock, and Amarillo.
